My Students
Our school is Title I. Students range from Asian to Hispanic to African-American to Arabic. Our school has a high population of special education students with a large spectrum of abilities and challenges such as autistic, emotionally disturbed, speech and language and other health impairments. Our school is the definition of diversity.
These first graders are curious, energetic and inspiring.
They are also a diverse group of students who come from a high needs area, who love to get their hands on new materials. This class has students with IEPs (Individualized Learning Programs) and who are English Language Learners, but that does not stop them from being thirsty learners.
My Project
These students are energetic. A lot of these students have special needs and those special needs include sensory processing. I've seen our Occupational Therapist use items in this project with my students and it works wonders! We just don't have enough for our special needs population.
When their sensory processing is under control, they are different kids!
They way they focus with items such as weighted vest or chair bands compared to the way they "focus" without, is a world of difference.
When my one students puts on the weighted vest, he gets all his work done and can have a conversation with classmates and adults. When another student uses the headphones, he works independently and can enjoy his lunch in the cafeteria. Please consider donating to this project!
