Sensory Processing and Integration

Help me give my students a 4 way sand and water table to help with their sensory needs as well as the inflatable pea pod chair to help them calm and self-soothe.

My Students

I work in a self-contained special education classroom that services students grades K-6 on a military base in Hawaii. My students disabilities can range from Autism, Emotional Disabilities and Intellectual Disabilities. They have a lot of sensory needs in order to self calm themselves or take breaks in order to be able to participate with their general education peers. My students are amazing!! They are making improvements everyday in communication, academics, life skills, behavior skills, and social skills. I would like to provide them with much needed sensory items in order for them to deal with anxiety, emotions, sensory overload and calming. These items will allow my students to experience and participate more actively with their peers if they have a sensory diet available to them. Currently, I have a student who asks her aide for squeezes and chin because she seeks deep tissue therapy. An inflatable pea pod could provide that as well as foam rollers for her to learn to do that on her own. Another student likes her hand rubbed by an adult, sensory brushes would allow her to self soothe and keep her self calm without an adult.

My Project

Sensory processing affects communication in kids.

Imagine not being about to calm yourself or not being able to focus on one thing because there are too many other sensory things happening around you.

My students experience this everyday and it causes them anxiety, stress and tantrums not because they want to but simple because their minds and bodies can not help it. These items will help my students self soothe and calm down during they day when they need to. Please give them the tools that they need to become successful and be with their same age peers. Thank you!
