This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a special education preschool classroom in a Title 1 school. My students have severe and profound intellectual disabilities. They are nonverbal, have physical impairments, visual impairments, and some are wheelchair-bound.

These students are sweet as can be and deserve a proper classroom that stimulates their brains.

Their smiles brighten up our day, but I'd like to make them smile more often with items that spice up our classroom and their lives. I've had many of these students more than two years and I've seen them flourish with the items that we've gotten from wonderful donors so far!

My Project

I teach a severe needs special education preschool classroom with students ages 3-5 years old. These students are bright, joyful, and love to play! They are each unique in their own way and have different abilities and disabilities. With that being said, our classroom needs age appropriate toys that are multi-functional so that we can work on tasks to strengthen their skills such as following one-step directions, counting, sorting, identifying colors/shapes/objects, and working on fine-motor skills in the process.

Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, which lead to the child's ability to complete more complex learning tasks.

Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. This is why I've decided to fill my classroom with multi-purpose sensory toys and you can help me do that!
