Sensory Play in PreK

Help me give my students critical resources that will not just reduce stress and calm anxieties, but also support cognitive and social-emotional development

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Erika's classroom raised $271

This project is fully funded

My Students

I teach in a high-poverty, all-female public school/Head Start program. We use a project-based approach which lends itself very naturally to lots of experiments and field experiences as the context for learning critical pre-literacy, pre-math and social-emotional skills.

My students are fiercely curious and active four-year old girls learning in a single-sex classroom environment.

One of the most common questions I hear is, “How...”, which inevitably leads us into an experiment/investigation! Everyday is a joy with loads of learning and lots of laughter.

This year, we are studying the natural environment (trees), the built environment (buildings), the interaction between people and the natural and built environment (reduce, reuse, recycle), culture and art (through a clothing study), and physics and coding (through a balls study)

My Project

Inspired by universal design principles and developmentally-appropriate practice, this funding would help ensure that a variety of sensory materials be located in learning centers throughout the classroom.

Beneficial outdoor sensory play experiences would be simulated indoors with play “dirt”, sensory noodles, sand, and water beads; children could also explore light and touch at the light table using the translucent balls.

These materials will be integrated into learning centers to support child cognitive and social and emotional development with study-relevant independent and collaborative problem solving challenges.

It is most typical that teachers in my district have at least two children exhibiting significant behavioral challenges. While this project would support the needs of all children, it is designed to provide necessary resources for those experiencing chronic stress or trauma, and/or exhibiting significant behavioral challenges.
