This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Preschool classroom consists of special needs students as well as typically learning students. My students range from 3-5 years old and have a range of developmental delays including those with Autism, severe communication delays, motor delays, and social emotional delays. I teach in an inner city school and many families do not have the resources to introduce their children to sensory play opportunities. I would love for my students to have the opportunity to reap the benefits that sensory play can offer them if our classroom had the right resources. The materials that I am pursuing will offer a multi-sensory approach to learning.

The materials will benefit their sensory development, fine motor skills, language development, social skills, cognitive skills, emotional regulation, sensory integration, and they promote inclusion.

The sensory materials provide a hands-on experience that will help in stimulating their senses including sight, touch, smell, and hearing. The students will pour and scoop the materials with tools developing their fine motor skills and their hand-eye coordination skills.

Sensory activities can promote language development and social interactions amongst my students. They can communicate what they are feeling, seeing, and experiencing while learning how to share, take turns, wait, and play. It will promote problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and enhance their creativity. I am requesting laminating paper and velcro in addition to create visuals to support their learning and manage their behavior during sensory exploration.

For my students with special needs sensory activities will help regulate their emotions and also help with sensory processing disorders.

All students would benefit from sensory play opportunities while actively engaging them and enhancing their learning.
