My Students

My school is located in a high poverty urban area in the second largest city in the state of Maine. I am the Art Teacher and I am blessed to be working with each and every student! Many of my children have very diverse backgrounds, speak many languages and have special needs. Our entire school is on a free breakfast and lunch plan along with snacks such as fruits or vegetables each day. The reality for most of our students is that school might be the only stable and engaging environment in their lives. It is our job to keep these students engaged, excited and motivated! The one thing that each one of our wonderfully diverse students posses is the ability and drive to learn. I would like to continue this positive motivation and help inspire them in the Art Room.

My Project

My students have a high need for fidget toys, and sensory outlet tools. I have witnessed each day the way these small tools help change a student from grumpy, sad, and frustrated to refocused, ready to learn, and happy(ish). Sometimes the emotions our students experience just need a moment of processing, before our students are ready to move on to the next task. These tools help provide that. These tools provide a calming outlet to help deal with the daily stress of transitions throughout their day. Often students arrive at my room already disregulated and upset full of emotion. These tools, such as a stress ball, help them regulate their - unexplainable at times -emotions. Our students are so motivated to learn we just need to help provide them with a toolbox of ways to calm, and refocus to tap into their very curious and able-to-learn minds!
