My Project
My students are developing their fine motor tasks for pre-vocational tasks. Assembling packages with the goodie bags and labels which are printed on with a different theme each month helps to improve their fine motor, executive functioning, and visual motor skills. They also benefit from the social aspect of distributing the packages which can contain stress balls or markers to their peers and school staff. Pencil grips help the student use an appropriate grasp when writing notes for the bags.
Students with special needs require additional supports to help regulate their sensory systems.
The tools selected can provide the sensory input they need to help attain a calm and focused state which helps them regulate their emotions. Weighted vests provide proprioceptive input to the body. I have numerous students who chew on their shirts, pencils or items that shouldn't be put into their mouths. Chewy tools are great replacements to chewing on these inedible items. They are appropriate items to chew on, look like a necklace so it doesn't call attention that the student has different needs, but still provide the student with the needed oral input. Many of the studentss feet cannot reach the ground when they are sitting in their chairs. The PVC fittings fit over chair legs and when a pvc is placed in the fitting, between the chair legs, it provides an elevated, stable surface children can place their feet on to feel secure when sitting. Squeeze balls can help the student strengthen their hands but also provide their muscles with a physical action to help their brain relax when they are required to concentrate and sit in their chairs. When the students realize these items are tools which benefit them, they often learn to request them in order to self-regulate.
