Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Kindergarteners are curious hands-on learners. They need repetition and lots of practice to master foundational skills like counting and number sense. Utilizing counting collections gives them this important practice. Counting Collections is a structured opportunity for children to count a collection of objects. They might count the items one by one, skip-count by groups, or sort and count the sorted groups they make. After the children have organized and counted the collection, they record how they counted the objects in the collection.

When students have the opportunity to physically handle and count objects in a collection, they build number sense which strengthens their one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, conservation, subtilizing, estimating, skip-counting, and flexible thinking.

Your donation to this project will provide students in this classroom with glue to make slime and a variety of figurines for students to search for inside the slime and then count. These counting collections will give students a variety of materials to physically hold, move, count, organize, and sort, and the slime will give the students a sensory experience that will help their counting and learning stick with them. This hands-on practice will help them master the most foundational skill in mathematics--counting, and the science behind the properties of slime.
