Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My children are so sweet! They are also kind, caring, and compassionate. However, being that my children start at the ages 3 and 4, some have a hard time controlling their emotions. Learning how to control their emotions and giving them options of things they can do instead of hitting, kicking, spitting, slapping, or biting others is paramount in a Transitional Kindergarten classroom. This is why the "emotional" portion of Social-Emotional learning is so important.

Teaching children how to deal with their social-emotional issues starts with providing them with spots to help them calm themselves after being triggered.

Having items for a calming corner like a canopy and bean bag will help my children to have a place to unwind and take a quiet book or items such as the sensory pin toy.

Other times, children need something more physical to help their vestibular system to calm down. This is the purpose of the swivel chair and sequined fabric sensory wall. Swivel chairs can benefit children's vestibular system by providing controlled movement that stimulates the inner ear, which is responsible for balance and spatial orientation. This stimulation can improve a child's balance, coordination, and body awareness. For children who are sensory seekers, this type of movement can be calming and help them regulate their sensory input. I have a swing in my classroom and that is wonderful for the children who need back and forth, but some children need the spinning to calm themselves. The sequined sensory wall will give them tactile stimuli that can help children relax, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calm.
