Sensory Materials Swept Away By Hurricane Ida

Help me give my students back the materials they lost as a result of Hurricane Ida. Our school was severely impacted by the recent storm, especially the classrooms in the basement.

My Students

My students are the most affectionate and loving children I have ever met. Although they have autism and are unable to express themselves through words, they show love and gratitude in much more meaningful ways. As the saying goes, "actions speak louder than words" and the actions of my little angels scream LOVE! Each day in my classroom is a new adventure; some days we have our ups and some days we have our downs, but there are always hugs and smiles!

Basically, my students are my biggest inspiration.

Despite the constant struggle of not being able to navigate the world around them and the frustration it brings them, my students manage to find a way to connect with those closest to them. Ironically enough, my students (individuals who thrive on tangibles and logical thinking) have mastered the most illogical, intangible, and difficult part of being human - showing unconditional love!

My Project

Children with autism rely heavily on sensory materials in order to help them appropriately attend during class. Unfortunately, a lot of our sensory items were destroyed when the basement of our school flooded. We also lost visuals, laminating paper, and Velcro, which are all essential to creating a learning environment suitable for our students. With your generous donations, we can create new visual schedules, first/then boards, and visuals for our storybooks. Our children will also be able to better attend during morning meeting, story group, and their individual seat work with the help of weighted pillows, vibrating pillows, and the fidget toys. 2020 was a rough year for our students because of Covid and remote learning, and now we got hit by Hurricane Ida and a terrible flood. Please help us bring normalcy back for our students - they deserve it!
