This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My caseload is made up of thirty wonderful students in grades kindergarten through fifth. Communication is a foundation for daily life; however, many of my students lack the basic skills to express themselves and find daily academics challenging. A significant amount of my students are learning English as a second language and lack the basic sound-letter correspondence, do not have basic reading skills and struggle to comprehend information. My students work hard everyday and I am constantly looking for new ways to get them engaged in lessons!
My Project
Providing my students with various sensory materials will help them focus on lessons and create a more productive learning environment. If a student is struggling to focus or is easily distracted it becomes increasingly difficult for them to grasp a new skill or learn a new strategy. In addition, when a student struggles with specific activities they also have increased difficulty focusing.
The sensory balls, pencil toppers, fidget toys and seat cushions will help facilitate curiosity, exploration, and help my students become more engaged while they play, learn, and explore various topics during my curriculum.
Providing them with sensory activities and toys allows them to take short productive breaks and creates an environment that the students find fun and engaging. When the students are enjoying what they are doing they retain more information, creating a more productive and enjoyable lesson.
