This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students range from kinder-1st grade. What makes them so special is the difference we see in each of them progress that we're actually seeing as we work with them over time. A lot of times, it seems as if the workload is a bit much for them, we sometimes notice a few sensory behaviors. Typically, we give them 2-3 minute brain breaks in between work. This allows them to wiggle around a little bit and use a highly preferred item of their choice. Lots of times, they resort to sensory items. Now the project I have in mind is a sensory list of materials, that way we can swap out the materials every week or two.
Materials: Rice, Soapy water, Play dough, Therapy dough, Kinetic sand, Dry pasta/cereal, Cotton balls, Water beads, Shape/Letter manipulative, Cut straws, Cut up paper, Confetti strips, Fluffy slime, and so much more!
The variety of sensory materials will grasp the students attention. It's something that can keep them interested while in the sensory room or even just having a 2-3 minutes brain break after completing assignments. The way the students faces light up and how excited they are when they see there's been new things added to the sensory bins/room. It lets staff know that they actually enjoy utilizing the bins/rooms. It teaches them about their senses; different things to see, touch, feel and even smell.
