Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My elementary school is located in one of the most poverty impacted areas in Oregon and in a large hub of diverse immigrant populations. 84% of Alder students are children of color, 100% receive free/reduced price lunch, and many are bi-lingual, with 26 languages spoken in their homes.
Here, we strive to be a community of lifelong learners, to honor diversity, and to pursue excellence.
Each member of our community is committed to this vision of excellence. It is evident in the display of student work, the emphasis on our school-wide life-skills program and the strong academic programs.
We are very proud to be the first "Dreamer School" in the Nation. As Dreamers, we are committed to the goal of getting each student through secondary school and onto college. This project will help make our school an equitable place for all students, so that each can reach his or her potential in school and beyond.
My Project
Sensory learning tools are chosen specifically to be used with students with disabilities or behavioral challenges in their general education classrooms in order to help them meet various sensory needs during instruction and help keep them focused. Balance balls help children who have a need to fidget or who have sensory processing disorders or ADHD reach their full potential in the classroom. “Sitting still” for these students may not be the best for their brains. Some kids just need more movement than others. And for some kids with a sensory processing disorder or ADHD, being in motion allows their brains to be engaged.
Fidget toys and chair bands are also helpful tools for students who need movement.
Students can keep their hands moving with fidget toys in order to self-regulate and stay on task in the classroom. "Chair bands" stretch under a student's chair or desk, so that she can bounce her legs or kick her feet without making noise and disrupting the class. For some students, a little bit of extra motion helps their bodies calm and their brains focus.
Another self-regulation tool is the Hoberman Ball. It is used as a visual aid to teach children how to take a full breath; a skill that helps children calm themselves down. Some of our students need help regulating noise in order to be able to work in a classroom environment. For students sensitive to noise, headphones turn a noisy school environment into a safe place where they can be successful. Weighted blankets are another helpful tool for children with sensory processing disorders, ADHD, or anxiety. The blanket helps children feel calm and secure, which facilitates learning by allowing the child to focus in the classroom.
