This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school we have a program to help students with Autism reach their academic potential. I am the teacher of 7 students that are in 1st or 2nd grade, many being nonverbal. Stephen Shore once said, “if you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” When you enter my room you see that each student has a specific set of needs, abilities, strengths, and struggles.

Many of my students have various sensory needs that they battle with daily affecting their communication, processing abilities, concentration, comprehension, and more.

It is my job to address each of these things every day when they enter my room. This job is one I take tremendous joy in and I want to create an environment that is adaptable to all of my students needs. In our room we set high expectations for our students and ourselves as educators. We individualize instruction for every student, every day to set our students up for success.

My Project

Sensory processing is something overlooked by most people but it is something that is affecting many students with Autism. This can often lead children with Autism to feeling extremely overwhelmed by the world around them.

Tasks that many might not put much thought into such as walking into a new room, eating lunch, using the restroom, or sitting at a desk are things that can cause a high level of anxiety in my students.

They have a need to regulate their own body through the use of sensory objects. I am asking for resources that will meet my students sensory needs in our classroom. This will give them the opportunity to decompress their sensory system so that they can reach their academic potential. The requested materials include fidgets to keep their body and brain balanced, rockers, light covers to decrease the emphasis of harsh fluorescent, soft surfaces, and more. These materials will be set up in a “sensory corner” in the classroom so that children can address their sensory needs while decreasing behavioral challenges and anxiety. It will be a positive and calming place that will give them the ability to be in control of their own body, mind, and environment.
