My Students
My first grade students are very resilient and eager learners! They have overcome so many challenges this year and continue to come to school with a smile on their face (at least I think they are smiling behind their mask). We continue to learn and adapt together and work to make our days as great as possible. We love to sing and dance in our personal space, read, write, add, and we are even learning about the rainforest!
My Project
My students have faced many challenges over the past year, as most students have. They began the year virtually and have since transitioned into a hybrid model, with half the class coming for half the day. We will begin yet another transition to full day school for my entire class. Currently with only half the class at a time, student have the flexibility to sit on the floor or stand when needed and still maintain social distancing.
With 19 students coming back, they will have less opportunities to wiggle, fidget and move, a crucial component for their learning.
I already have a flexible classroom and have many choices for seating for students. Unfortunately, with social distancing I will not be able to use them. I'm hoping to add more wiggle cushions and chair bands to what I currently have, so that all students can have these available throughout the day. I'm also wanting to add a fidget mat for their desk space so that they can keep their hands busy as well.
Young students especially benefit from frequent movement throughout the day. We can no longer move from location to location in our classroom, or move around to work in a small group. I'm hoping that these options will help my students focus in a new Covid friendly environment.
