My students need sensory items, like weighted lap pads, wood blocks, and 2 dynamic cushions, to help them remain focused on on task because they have difficulty sitting for long periods of time on the carpet and in their chair.

My Students
Do you know what it is like to not be able to remain focused on a task because of the constant need to move or what it is like to become over stimulated by the environment? My students, who are classified as having Autism, have difficulty remaining on task and focused.
My 2nd grade students are classified as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
They are in a 6:1:1 specialized public school. Their functioning levels and needs vary. They have difficulty learning new material and maintaining skills that are previously learned. They require frequent sensory breaks to help keep them focused and on task. All of my students receive Occupational Therapy, but they need more sensory integration in the classroom as well. Some of my students require sensory diets to help with overstimulation from their environment. However, all of my students have sensory issues that need to be addressed all day long. They need to move and they need sensory activities in order to function. When we incorporate sensory before and during an activity, they are able to remain on task and seated for a longer period of time.
My Project
By incorporating the sensory materials, it will allow my students to incorporate their sensory needs into every part of their day. By including weighted lap pads, it will allow them to receive the sensory input that they need while sitting and learning. The bean bags will allow students to receive sensory input while reading a book or taking a break. The cushioned chair mats will allow some of my students to be able to sit for a longer period of time in their chair or on the floor while receiving the necessary input that they crave. The purpose of the sensory materials will help to increase their time on task while providing them with the necessary sensory needs that they each need. It is my hope that providing my students individualized sensory materials during learning will increase their rate of learning so that new material will be learned and generalized. It is also my hope that it will also help to calm down the students that become overstimulated by the environment.
My students will be able to integrate sensory to increase their time on task and improve their rate of learning.
For some students, the constant need for sensory, will slow their rate of learning. I hope that the new sensory items will increase their learning so they can soon generalize material, because all of my students are capable of learning and generalizing skills into many environments.
