This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students with autism are attending school for the first time in a newly opened Flexroom! They all have sensory issues and when they become overwhelmed a calming activity, like using a light table with manipulatives, can help them to relax, deescalate, and refocus. Sensory issues refer to difficulties that individuals have in processing and responding to sensory stimuli. For some children, this can result in an aversion to certain textures, sounds, or lights, making it challenging to engage in academic activities that involve these stimuli.

Light table interventions can improve visual-motor integration, visual perception, and sensory processing abilities in children with developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.

Additionally, LED light tables can be used with a variety of sensory materials, such as colored translucent shapes, sand, or water. The materials for this project will provide a tactile and visual experience that can help my students engage in sensory exploration, improving their sensory processing abilities, and helping them to regulate and refocus.
