My students need multi-sensory materials: vibrating brushes, sound tubes, and theraputty to meet their complex sensory needs and regulate themselves.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Citera's classroom raised $412

My Students
"I think the core criterion is the social awkwardness, but the sensory issues are a serious problem in many, many cases of autism, and they make it impossible to operate in the environment where you're supposed to be social." - Temple Grandin on Living with Autism
My classroom is comprised of 6 teenagers with moderate to severe disabilities.
Every student in my class has been diagnosed with autism, due to this my students struggle with SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder). My students have difficulty with processing, and acting upon the information received through their senses. My students often face challenges performing every day tasks such as tying their shoes, focusing on instruction, and transitioning between classes due to their inability to meet their sensory needs.
Our school is a specialized public school in Staten Island, New York dedicated exclusively to teaching special needs children. The materials requested will not only benefit my current class, but any group of students I may have the privilege of teaching in the future.
My Project
My students require various materials that are adapted to how they process information. Materials such as Vibraderm Skin Massage Brushes, Vibrating Bug, Thera-Putty, Sight & Sound Tubes, and See-Through Sensory Blocks will provide my students with the multi-sensory input they require.
In order to become more social, successful learners, my students need leisure activities that cater to their own sensory processing needs. If provided with the requested materials, my students will display decreased anxiety, behavioral problems, and depression, and more importantly ... an increase in self esteem.
My teenage learners with autism deserve the opportunity to feel safe and comfortable within their classroom, and their own bodies.
The materials requested will fulfill the sensory needs of my students when used throughout the school day, or as per the need of the child.
