I teach students with autism in kindergarten through second grades in a high poverty school. As a teacher in a low-income school, my students face many struggles outside of school. All of the students at my school receive free lunches due to the poverty level, and because of this many of them are not able to experience things that many take for granted.
My students are silly, energetic, and love school.
We are in a self-contained school with students with autism ranging from kindergarten to 22 years old. We depend a lot on the use of visuals in the classroom to help the children be successful in their day. The students I serve have varying levels of skills and needs. My students need sensory support, visual support, and picture cues to be successful.
My students are eager about learning and love coming to school!
My Project
All of my special needs students have sensory needs. Each student currently has a sensory diet. They all have these sensory needs built into their day. They already use items such as different fidgets, listening to music, pressure vests, dimming the lights, etc.
These students need a sensory break in order to get the sensory input they need and then be able to return to class so they can learn!
We are teaching our students to use sensory items to help improve focus, regulate challenging behavior, and create a sense of well-being and peace in my classroom. A light table will allow students to meet their sensory needs while learning.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
