Sensory Experience

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class consists of 1 students who range from 12-16. My students have severe cognitive disabilities, and the majority of them have Autism and other sensory/processing disorders. They also all have severe communication deficits/disorders. Although they have these deficits, they are still able to create lasting relationships and bonds with each other and us. Since they have sensory and processing disorders, it is really beneficial for them to have a lot of varied sensory experiences to help regulate their needs!!

My Project

These materials will be used to give my students a much needed sensory break from the day. My students who have sensory processing disorders need a break from some of the things that happen in a regular day such as a noisy lunchroom or noisy hallway.

My students will be able to come to class and pick a bin or a light to take a short sensory break in order to get them back on track and able to do their schoolwork again.

I will use the bins and beans, popcorn and sand to build sensory bins that can be easily transported anywhere in the classroom. I will also add the lights to my currently limited selection of lights to enhance their experience as well.
