Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at an elementary school in Miami Dade County. All of my amazing students are from a bilingual home, and English is their second language. My school is a Title I school which means all my students receive free breakfast and free or reduced-price lunches due to their low socio-economic status.
Even though all my students have varying disabilities, they are super sweet and they love to come to school everyday.
They are smart and funny, and bring joy to all who meet them. However, due to their disability, they struggle to focus and stay on task. They are working on learning to self-regulate and calm themselves down. This is a struggle for any child, but my students face additional challenges. They are in a self-contained classroom due to their need for constant redirection and assistance.
My Project
I am a teacher of seven amazing Kindergarten and first-grade students with Autism. My students love sensory items which help them to regulate during stressful and relaxing times. One of the skills that I teach is how to self-regulate during stressful times.
Sensory toys are an incredible learning tool for my students.
I am requesting sensory chew necklaces for my students who are comforted by oral stimulation. These will help them relieve anxiety without biting anyone or anything that may cause harm. I would like to provide class with a variety of different fidget/sensory toys that they can carry with them in their pocket, use at their desk, or in the sensory corner. Because each child is unique, I am requesting a wide variety of fidget/sensory toys so that each child can find what works best for them. We also help them learn to communicate using communication boards and choice boards, which need to be laminated, and then choices are attached using the velcro dots.
Studies have shown that integrating sensory toys improves children's daily social and emotional function.
The ability to self-regulate will improve their ability to participate in classroom activities both in our self-contained classroom and as they are able to participate in activities with their nondisabled peers.
