Sensory Community Building

Help me give my students the tactile, hands-on, sensory tools to help set them up for success both academically and emotionally this year.

My Students

I will have a larger class this year and will be working with limited space. I am so excited to take on the challenges this year will knowingly bring.

My students are inquisitive, creative, sensitive, and oh so bright!

Each year I seem to have more and more students who struggle with anxiety who really benefit from sensory items to help them calm down. I have a Peace Corner set up in my room and students who need a break love having a safe place to go. I have been trying to expand some of the items available for them to use when they are in the Peace Corner. Calming and even fidget items have been a huge success for my students.

I have always had an alternative set up in my classroom with flex seating and tables as opposed to individual desks. I really enjoy the flexibility this gives me and my students throughout our days together. Being able to move and interact around the room is paramount to engagement and retention. We will have some limitations on this school year and I am eager to find ways to have my students interact and stay motivated this year.

My Project

These resources are greatly needed to support my students both academically and emotionally during their time in my classroom. The set of headphones will allow my sensory sensitive students to tune out any distractions and tune into the task at hand.

I plan on using the tactile items in tubs and having the students use them everyday for community building activities such as morning meeting, social-emotional curriculum support, and brain breaks.

This year is challenging in so many ways and a healthy mindset has become paramount to our days in school.
