Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have a self-contained room of students with moderate to severe autism. Many autistic students have sensory deficits and challenges processing. The tiles, manipulatives, and fidgets I am seeking will be used for students to interact and self-regulate. Additionally, my students can get emotionally moderated by sensory input; including textures that they can connect with to get joy, calm, or self-regulation. Students with autism are often disconnected or slow to process input socially or mentally as a condition of their autism. The nature of tactile input can create a heightened or intense sensory experience that allows them to experience things with fewer barriers or challenges. Therefore, they have more intense experiences that allow a simpler mental connection to emotions. The objects in my donor choice project are exactly the type of tools that will help my class with emotional regulation and connection on a simpler, clearer, and more direct way.
My goal for this project is simply to add these sensory items to my room in individual or group collections--such as a sensory wall--that will give my students options to experience sensory stimulation to regulate challenging parts of their school day.
The intent is to make them more successful at school in general.
My students are all different and each new class, this year included, is a set of great abilities and challenges. My donors choose projects are my way to give my amazing students the tools to be the very best students and people they can be.
