My Students

Help us learn! Have you ever thought of what it might be like to go to your job and try to do your best, however you can hear everything going on in the office amplified by 100. How about feeling like your muscles are cramped the entire time while trying to work?

I have 6 students in my class who have Autism and live in the Bronx of New York City.

All 6 are on the extreme end which means they constantly need to be moving or manipulating things to learn. They need sensory input and output all the time. One of my students has Rett syndrome which means her nervous system is breaking down slowly, she needs constant pressure and stretching on her body. 3 of my students cannot speak, they love music and love doing anything hands on, it is their way of communicating. We need your help to have educational items in our room that help with my students sensory issues. Hands on sensory materials would drastically improve my students ability to learn and be happy in school. Thank you!

My Project

The items I have requested all have to do with sensory issues. The chew tubes and stretch bands are for my 11 year old student who has Rett's syndrome. She has so much built up pressure in her mouth, and in her arms. The stretch band and chew tubes would help slow her regression. The music kit was a request from my students who LOVE music but do not have it during school. At age 11 my students' goals mostly consist of being able to do daily life skills independently, which is what the dress boards are for. The math manipulative materials will help my students who are struggling with basic concepts such as money and time, be able to see and feel it to aid their learning.

My students are severely disabled and I have found through classroom research the sensory inputs that make them happy, calm, and aid their learning. Your donations will make 6 children calm enough in the class to begin working on skills that will help to make them more independent when they leave the school system at 21. I know my students can learn a lot, but they need these sensory inputs to get them ready to learn! Thank you!
