Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

" Being different is one of the most beautiful things on earth". Our students have a variety of sensory issues which impede their ability to learn if not met. A typical day requires two to three sensory breaks to help the students regulate and calm themselves before preceding onto academics.

The classroom is comprised of students on the Autism Spectrum.

We are part of a large inner city district struggling for resources which requires us to be creative in order to provide them quality instruction. Each student has different levels of sensory input, which requires a well thought out plan of action. The classroom is set up into centers providing students with many activities which are multi-sensory. Providing students with these breaks allows them the opportunity to improve motivational skills, calming techniques, and self-regulation strategies.

My Project

The classroom is set up into centers which allow students to be creative using a multi-sensory approach along with sensory driven activities. By using things such as play dough, the students are able to describe using a model that will depict something read previously in the day. The snap together letter blocks help students understand letters, letter sounds, how to build vocabulary, and correct pronunciation. The modeling sand allows them sensory input to calm them, regulate them, and develop strategies independently. By using sensory materials every opportunity during the day becomes a teachable moment.

Giving students the ability to use sensory strategies which calm, motivate, and self-regulate, empowers them to work independently.

The materials enhance their hand-motivational skills, along with their fascination with items that spin such as tops and wheels. Sensory integration refers to the process to perceive and organize the five senses.
