My Project
A sensory calming space allows students to calm down when they have big feelings or feel overwhelmed. During the day student students will have the freedom to go to a safe calming space that will not only give them the time to calm down and also provide the sensory input they may need. Being able to have that space in the classroom will allow them to calm down and then once they are calm go back to their educational task and continue learning. Currently, my students have a chair they sit in to calm down with a basket of sensory items for them. Their current calming space is in an open space in the classroom with no privacy to calm down completely. Making sure students are comfortable and have a private space to calm down when overwhelmed is an essential component in motivating them and taking care of their emotional needs so they can continue to learn throughout the day. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given time to calm down when having big feelings. Students almost always go back to their task, are more engaged, and complete their work t when they are given time to calm down.
The products that I have selected will help my students have a private space to calm down.
The sensory hideaway is a private space with sensory included that will allow students to calm down and get sensory input. The sensory hideaway space will be extremely beneficial for some students who just need time to calm down. Having a sensory space within the classroom will be beneficial for all students and ensure that most academic time is used for learning to its maximum.
I have seen how a sensory space can promote emotional health and learning.
