Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students need to learn academics, but before students can learn, they must know how to regulate their emotions, understand their feelings, and embrace their unique selves. This project helps students with various special needs understand themselves, release sensory needs and help them regulate their emotions.
My students are children with mild to moderate exceptional needs, they have various medical conditions, as well as, emotional regulation issues at times.
The items purchased with this project will benefit them immensely. They will learn how to be proud of their exceptionalities and unique abilities through picture books that we will read for social-emotional learning. In addition, we will use sensory tools such as weighted buddies, kinetic sand, stress balls, squishy disks, sensory wiggle blocks, etc.
Through these tools, we hope that students will learn to, independently, regulate their feelings. They will learn to ask for a break, by using a visual prompt, verbal expression, or receptively, to express their needs. This will help empower them as learners and independent people with needs. Once students are in the calm corner, there will be various sensory tools for them to use to help them calm down, get out their wiggles, or regulate their frustrations, fear, and sadness. By using these tools, I hope, to decrease the time my students need to go to an alternative room to calm down, which interferes with instruction and social skills with other children. My students deserve to independently express their emotions in a safe, effective, way.
By encouraging students to ask for a break to use sensory input and output tools, they will exhibit less stress, frustration, and excited feelings. This will regulate their emotions enough to produce success in the classroom academically and emotionally.
