"If it hasn't been in the hand and body, it can't be in the brain." - Bev Bos. This quote truly defines many of the learning that happens in my classroom. My students learn best when provided with sensory input. It makes them focus in their tasks.
My students belong in the K-3 Special Day Class Program for students with autism.
They are enthusiastic learners who learn in a variety of ways. Each one of them is unique, with different strengths, preferences, interest and challenges. Despite their differences, all of them are willing to learn given the motivation and appropriate reinforcement that the classroom staff give to them.
My Project
All of my students have sensory challenges which is a concern that we, the teacher and service providers, are trying our best to address. We recognize that they have difficulty integrating their senses which result to being overwhelmed that may contribute to unwillingness to comply with instructions. Thus, the resources from this project will help my students gain sensory input that will help them concentrate on learning. During free choice activity, they can request for the items to play with. The students may choose any of the washable sensory play material (sensory beads, sensory ball, sensory noodles). They may also choose theraputty which helps strengthen hand muscles and fine motor skills as well as provide opportunity for them to create different shapes. The sensory balls can serve as fidget tools while they are engaged in other activities such as circle time or large group activities.
This project will have a big impact on my students as the materials from this project will provide the sensory input that they need to concentrate on their work.
It will also be an opportunity for them to communicate/ socialize while playing using the sensory materials.
