My Project
It's my first year as a school social worker, and one of the needs I'm noticing in my school is for sensory tools for students who are overstimulated throughout the day. When students experience a sensory overload, they might disengage from learning and become distressed, yell, or refuse to participate.
With these sensory tools, I hope to teach students how they can clear their sensory overload - so they can reset and refocus on learning.
About the tools:
-Weighted blankets and neck pillows stimulate touch receptors, helping your body relax (it feels like a hug!).
-Noise cancelling headphones provide an option for students who are easily overwhelmed when the class gets noisy.
-Muted lighting (through warm-glow string lights and fluorescent light covers) softens the effects of fluorescent light, which can overwhelm some children's sensory input without them being aware of it.
-Orbeez are water beads we use to create small sensory bags for students to keep in their classroom. They provide a tactile sensory experience with their rubbery, squishy, and soft texture.
-Squishy fidgets help kids regulate by focusing the student's attention to the touch experience of the fidget. Squishy fidgets are the clear favorite type fidget for my students - and unfortunately, our previous squishy was lost.
Sensory tools such as these are helpful for all students, but particularly students with disabilities and students with mental health diagnoses like PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, or ADHD. I serve many students at Whittier who fall in these categories, including our Federal Setting III Emotional and Behavioral Disability classroom.
