My Students

I am a special education teacher in a self-contained autistic classroom in a Title I school. 95% of the students in our school qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. There are lots challenges each school year meeting the needs of the students academically, socially, and emotionally.

My students, who fall all across the autism spectrum, and struggle with communication skills and academic achievement, still come to school, work hard, and do their best no matter what obstacles they face.

They have a desire to achieve their goals and we do everything we can in the classroom to help them get there!

My Project

Do you notice the flickering lights of the fluorescent lights in offices? Do you hear the hum of the air conditioning flipping on and off? Have you ever been in a place where someone or something was just too noisy, so you left? Have you noticed that when sitting for a long time, you have a need to move somehow? My students with autism, who have a difficult time managing sensory input and meeting their sensory needs safely, can't tune noise out, and often can't leave a situation just because it's too noisy. We can't turn the lights off in the classroom, and we have to provide solutions for the students to wiggle in their seats safely while working.

As their teacher, I have found that I have to find safe and effective ways to help my students manage and meet their sensory needs.

My students need light covers to help manage sensory input from the glare and flickering lights that is distracting to them, allowing for better focus while working. Many of my students have noise sensitivity and ear muffs help turn down the volume of a student throwing a loud fit that may increase behaviors in other students around them, and other noise they have a hard time managing such as a busy cafeteria filled with children, fire alarms, and flushing toilets. Wobble cushions allow for the students to wiggle safely in their seats while working. They work very hard and rotate every 15 min to a new group, but some of them need extra wiggle and movement time. With wobble cushions, they can sit in their groups and continue to wiggle safely, meeting a sensory need, while still being able to work.
