My Project

Middle school students are at a critical developmental stage when they are experiencing changes in their bodies and a new social environment. This makes it especially difficult to regulate their emotions and actions. Additionally, due COVID-19, many students are adjusting to being in a face-to-face school setting, after spending extended periods of time learning from home. Our Middle Schoolers are in a unique situation, as they are navigating a brand new school and blending their social circles from diverse backgrounds.

Due to the complex needs of our students, we hope to help support their social and emotional regulation by providing multiple outlets within the school setting.

We will accomplish this by creating spaces which engage multiple modalities of sensory stimulation. For our kinesthetic learners, Fitness Folding Exercise Bikes, will allow us to promote focus and mental clarity through positive movement breaks. For students who need less movement to self-regulate, we will provide a comfortable space with bean bags and other flexible seating. Auditory, visual and tactile needs will be met through calming sound machines, specialized lighting, and a variety of fidget tools.
