Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school district has a high ELL population. In the elementary school (pre-K – 4), 73% are ELL students. As of 2018, 60% of our students receive free lunch and 20% receive reduced lunch. Our community has two large manufacture plants and large farms that attract families to the area.

Our students are diverse.

They have different cultural backgrounds and families. We have students from different cultures and they learn to assimilate in our school environment. Our students range in ability as well. We have students with different academic, physical, and emotional needs and we encourage inclusion and understanding with all of our students.

My Project

Most of my students are very visual and tactile and learn best from art, music, and sensory materials. I adapt and modify their work to be at their level. My class is the only self contained class, moderate/severe. All of my students have sensory needs and these materials will support those needs. The blocks will be used with task box activities that work on building different sight words and creating thematic animals. The different paint materials will allow my students to participate in fun, free and directed art activities.

With the sensory materials, they will be more attentive to the activity and will have a greater chance of staying engaged throughout the whole activity.

I will utilize all of these sensory items in my classroom to help my students balance their sensory needs and prepare for academic work.
