This year we serve 20 students, 3rd-5th grade in our Extended Resource Room. Our program serves students with a variety of needs that require a range between minimal support to maximum support. They are all working to achieve individual academic and/or social-emotional goals. Many of the students come to small group multiple times a day for Reading, Writing, Math, Social and/or Adaptive. Some students require additional behavior and/or sensory supports to help them achieve success in their general education classrooms. The types of exceptionalities we see in this program are Specific Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, ADHD, EBD (Emotional Behavior Disorder), Autism and/or Sensory Processing Disorders.
Our students are all AMAZING humans that range in their strengths, interests and passions.
They require more intervention and differentiation to help them reach their goals and feel successful in their school environment.
My Project
In our Extended Resource Room we share a room with two other teachers that run Title 1 reading groups. At some points in the day we have three small groups (3-6 students each) running at the same time. Many students are struggling to reacclimate to various distractions that they did not encounter during virtual learning the last year and a half. Our students are so happy to be back in school and are needing tools and supplies to help them be successful in the classroom environment.
We are currently asking for help in building a rich assortment of supplies and tools that will help each individual student reach their personal academic and social goals.
Our classroom does not have windows. Children with ADHD and autism are prone to sensory processing difficulties including light sensitivity. We are asking for fluorescent light coverings to help soften the lighting and provide a sense of outside view.
We have many students who require movement in order to boost their cognitive functioning. Having wiggle wobble cushions, wiggle chair feet and a foot roller allows movement in their seat, while providing safe movement without causing distractions to other learners. Many of our students have sensitive hearing or are easily distracted by sound. Having a variety of Soundproof Headphones will allow students to keep them in their rooms and have extras for special occasions like assemblies or emergency drills. Fidget tools are also in great need for my students.
Other basic classroom and learning supplies that allow our special education teacher and students to move through lessons with ease are: dry erase markers and erasers, erasable highlighters, guided reading strips, sharpener blade for our class pencil sharpener, a variety of colored tape to help visually divide and label things and folder clipboards.
