This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students have a difficult time with self-regulation, which can significantly impact their ability to focus and engage in learning activities. By providing a variety of sensory tools such as worry stones, kinetic sand, and fidget toys, I aim to help them explore different strategies for calming themselves and managing sensory overload. These tools will allow students to experiment with what works best for them in moments of stress or distraction, promoting self-awareness and emotional regulation. As they learn to recognize the sensory input that helps them feel calm, students will be better equipped to stay focused, participate in lessons, and engage with their peers.

In addition to supporting self-regulation, my students also need to strengthen and practice their fine motor skills.

Many of them face challenges with hand-eye coordination and dexterity, which can make everyday tasks like writing and manipulating objects difficult. By incorporating drawing paper, origami, and Velcro activities—tools we can easily create using laminating sheets—I can provide engaging, hands-on opportunities for students to practice fine motor movements in a fun and supportive way. These activities will help them build essential skills like hand strength, coordination, and precision while fostering creativity and problem-solving abilities.

What makes my students special is their resilience and determination to overcome challenges. While they may face difficulties with sensory processing, self-regulation, and fine motor skills, they also demonstrate a unique capacity for growth when given the right support. By providing sensory and fine motor tools tailored to their needs, I can help my students build the skills they need to succeed academically and socially, fostering a sense of independence and accomplishment in the process.
