My Students

My classroom consists of thirteen students grades K-4. It is a self-contained, low-incidence special education room. The individuals are diverse learners that have moderate to severe disabilities. Many of my students come from low-income homes. The class is diverse, coming from different backgrounds and cultures. No matter the challenging situations and difficulties they face, they continue to come to school happy and eager to learn; they are amazing!

We are a Chicago Public School on the southwest side of Chicago.

Currently, our district is in a financial crisis. Because of this, the school lacks funding to appropriately support our classroom and students. With a little help from Donors Choose, we can get tools to support, enhance, and facilitate learning in a productive way!

My Project

As the school year has come to an end, so have the lives of many of my sensory supplies and activities. Many of my students have autism. Because of their autism, many of the individuals are unable to self-regulate. They become over-stimulated or under-stimulated and need assistance to regulate. When this happens, students display behaviors that include: aggression, self-harm, running, jumping, and yelling. These not only disrupt the individual's learning, but the learning of their peers.

My students have sought assistance in regulation through sensory items and activities.

The moon sand and sensory beads are loved by all of my students and is a highly motivating, calming activity. Many of my students are unable to attend to tasks for long periods of time. 'Fidgets' help the students remain at the designated area with less resistance. 'Fidgets' include the Thera-putty and Water Wigglies.

Finally, storage and space are limited in my classroom. Independence is also emphasized and encouraged. The storage bins and cube organizer will provide the students additional opportunities to exercise independence. All of the activities will be organized and labeled into the storage bins. This will allow the students to identify the activity they would like and retrieve it and return it with minimal assistance. With your help, the classroom can become an engaging and accommodating environment necessary for functional and academic development. Thank you for your consideration!
