My Students
I serve a remarkable and unique group of children who are part of a school population of which 80% are African American and nearly 80% are low-income. Our school has defied so many odds, including attempts to shut down our high performing school. I am privileged to work at a school whose students and community were a primary reason we prevailed in this fight!
My students are incredibly hardworking, resilient, collaborative, and have an indescribable drive toward accomplishing new and challenging things.
As an experienced math teacher, it has always been my goal to not only make our class fun and engaging, but also applicable to the real world. In a class where mistakes are highlighted and part of our classroom culture, students learn to feel comfortable challenging each other's thinking. In turn, this forces them to think critically about all possible outcomes. My students love to engage in math talk for this reason!
My Project
In my ocean themed classroom, students are already surrounded by calming blues and some flexible seating options but we are looking to add more!
The wiggle balance seats, sensory prizes, and jellyfish lava lamp would further add flexible seating options and calmness to our classroom (which during this time we all need!) I am also asking for a Teacher's Pay Teachers gift card which I will use to purchase resources for enrichment for my students already mastering grade level content.
The sensory toys could be used both at students seats when they need it during class as well as prizes to reward great math thinking, perseverance, and critical thinking. The packaging tape is always useful when hanging anchor charts and other classroom items.
