My Students
"Why fit IN, when you were born to stand OUT?"-Dr. Seuss. That's just what my students do! My classroom is a setting where students with special needs can grow and learn in their own unique style and at their own pace.
My students are special - in every sense of the word.
While my students have a wide range of varying needs and exceptionalities, they all share one common thread: a need for sensory integration. From a need to release energy, anxiety, or stress - to a need for sensory input to develop motor, cognitive, or language skills and increase concentration and focus, my students have a wide range of diverse sensory needs. My students struggle with day-to-day life activities which impede their access to learning in a general classroom setting. While a typical child may process sensory information even without thinking, such as walking into a noisy school cafeteria, my students require additional support and training to perform basic life activities.
My Project
By providing my students with materials that will meet their sensory needs, they will be able to do what every child goes to school for: to learn! My students need a variety of sensory materials to meet a wide range of sensory needs. Squeeze balls look like a lot of fun to kids, but in the resource classroom, they become an invaluable tool for learning. These can be used to release tension or anxiety, promote positive behavior, or as a pre-writing activity to help develop hand muscles in order to grip a pencil for writing. Ball chairs improve focus and concentration in students with attention deficits while helping to improve posture for students with abnormal gait development. Students with auditory processing difficulties can improve reading fluency and comprehension with auditory feedback. A sensory center will help my students grow and develop in more than just the academic arena - it will support healthy development across domains.

A sensory center in my classroom where there is currently a bare wall will send the message to my students that "this is your space - safe and secure - where you can be YOU!" All while LEARNING!
