Sensible Manipulatives for Special Ed

My Project

I am an older teacher with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. I taught one year before having my first child (now 24 yo). I have a senior at the high school I work at that has special needs. I worked as a teacher assistant for 10 years. Working with kids with special needs is my passion! It’s where my heart is. So much so, that I decided to go back to school to get an Alternative Teaching license so I may teach Special Ed and have my own classroom. As teachers are needed, especially Special Education teachers, there are many programs that will allow people to teach while obtaining their required schooling.

The kids I’m teaching my first year have multiple disabilities.

However, they are smart and can do many things. The main focus of our class is to learn life and vocational skills that will help them hopefully be able to get a job after high school. They may not be able to live on their own but that doesn’t mean they can’t learn life skills and get jobs. A lot of the manipulatives I am asking for are math related. Students are learning dollar bills and coin values. We go off campus to eat lunch and I encourage the students to order their food, pay for their food and learn that they get the exact amount owed back to them. I, of course, help them but the goal is for them to do it independently. I only have 6 students but the academic levels they have are all different.

Several of the manipulatives are building blocks and geometric shapes that they will be playing with when not working on academic skills.
