My Students
I am a special education teacher in a 6:1:1 classroom with all students with autism. A typical day in my classroom consist of redirecting atypical behavior and task repetition to help my students learn materials.
My students are kindergarten students with autism.
Most of them have negative behaviors through to a variety of deficits, especially sensory deficits. My school is in a beautiful new building but because it is a D75 school, budget is very low. There is not enough funding to provide my students with the sensory materials they need to keep them calm. I have a sensory area of which there is a bare doll house and a bin of colored rice I bought. My students go to the sensory area to calm down when they need to. Right now, there is not much choice for them in that small area so a lot of behaviors such as biting and pinching is occurring because sensory input is low.
My Project
I set up a sensory area where my students can take turns to go calm down. I would like to set up this area with a couple of choices such as having to squeeze sensory balls or put their hands in moon sand. A couple of my students are in high need of pressure being added to their body and I am not always there to give them a squeeze when they need it so the pressure vest and weighted blanket will help tremendously. I do want to keep these materials in one area so the students will know its okay and safe to go there whenever they need to. I think this will help the frequency of them getting out of their seat to pinch other students or bite to dramatically decrease.
This donation will definitely help improve my classroom.
My students are in such high needs with anything that gives them sensory input that any little thing will be life changing. I want these materials in this area to last and hope that the sensory area will be able to dramatically help calm my students and get them ready to focus on learning.
