I can't sound it out!! Sight words can provide quite a challenge to new readers! As many do not follow the common rules of phonics, they must be memorized, recognized by sight alone. In our classroom, we need some hands on, exciting activities that will help grow their sight word vocabularies!
I have a classroom full of 24 bright and active six and seven year olds!
We come from diverse backgrounds. For many of my students, this is their first time to be in school all day as full-day kindergarten has yet to be implemented across the district. Our school is located a middle class neighborhood in Oklahoma. I have a variety of learners in my room ranging from at-risk to well above grade level. It's my desire to make my classroom a fun, engaging learning environment for all my sweet firsties!
My Project
During our week, students rotate through a variety of literacy centers. These manipulatives will be a part of a sight word center and provide fun, engaging activities for my learners to choose from. Sight word games will be played in partner pairs and small groups. Leveled sight word readers will provide a variety of both fiction and nonfiction topics in which to practice the new words they are learning. Puzzles and sentence builders will provide independent, self checking activities for learners at all levels.
This project will provide my students the tools they need to grow their sight word vocabularies.
The many different games and activities will keep the learning fresh and exciting from week to week. Sight word knowledge is such an important step in building fluent, confident readers!
