This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my class face daily challenges processing sensory information. This inability to regulate their sensory systems can cause them to feel as if they have no control over their bodies. This can make it difficult to concentrate and focus at school which impacts their ability to learn.
The students in my classroom are amazing, fabulous, hard working kids who all have a diagnosis of Autism.
My classroom is a district level program designed to meet the unique learning needs of students with Autism. There are currently 6 students in my classroom ranging in age from 7- 10 years old. Each student in my class struggles with expressive and receptive language which impacts every aspect of their daily life.
As part of their exceptionality they also struggle with various sensory processing needs which impacts their ability to concentrate, focus, and learn within the classroom setting. My students are at the beginning stages of learning how to identify their sensory needs and which strategies help them maintain a regulated state. Learning how to regulate themselves will positively impact learning.
My classroom is located in a low income area of the city and with our school districts shrinking budget funding for materials and supplies has become extremely difficult to come by.
My Project
The materials I have requested will not only allow me and my staff to increase the ability of our students to identify their own sensory needs but it will also help each child identify what strategies are most effective for them. By providing each student with a wide variety of materials to support their sensory needs they will be better able to concentrate, focus, and ultimately learn throughout their school day.
The Sensory Game will provide an opportunity for the staff working in the room to identify specific sensory strategies for individual students. It will also provide the students with a fun and engaging activity to begin the process of learning which sensory strategies work best for them and which strategies address specific needs. This game will be an invaluable tool to our staff and to the students themselves.
These materials will allow us to better meet the unique needs of our students and provide them with the best learning environment possible.
There is no limit to their potential when they have the right supports and tools. Please help us provide them with every opportunity to succeed.
