My classroom consists of thirteen students grades K-4. It is a self-contained, low-incidence special education room. The individuals are diverse learners that have moderate to severe disabilities. Many of my students are from low-income homes. The class is diverse, coming from different backgrounds and cultures. No matter the challenging situations and difficulties they face, they continue to come to school happy and eager to learn; they are amazing!
We are a Chicago Public School on the southwest side of Chicago.
Currently, our district is in a financial crisis. Because of this, the school lacks funding to appropriately support our classroom and students. With a little help from DonorsChoose, we can get tools to support, enhance, and facilitate learning in a productive way!
My Project
My students are in need of sensory toys to increase productivity and on-task behavior. A large majority of my students have autism. While each student is unique with their own characteristics and abilities, all of the students require different levels of sensory input to help with regulation.
My students absolutely LOVE the marble run!
We currently borrow the game from another classroom. Some of the students come into school and declare that they will be doing all of their work so that they can play with the marble run. It is not something we have access to daily, so it results in a lot of disappointment on those days.
Thera-putty and stress balls are essentials in my classroom. They are very calming activities for some of my students who have difficulty sitting for an extended period of time. The current stock we have is low and from the previous school year. We are having to prioritize who needs it most, take turns, etc. A new supply would be greatly appreciated, as it is costly!
The students require frequent breaks from their academic work. They enjoy hands-on activities and games. I would like them to engage in games that are educational as a part of their break. The design drill is a game that they would enjoy playing; it targets fine motor skills, patterning, and color identification.
I can't thank you enough for your consideration of this project! My students have been given many challenges, yet they come to school each day with a smile on their face! I want to provide them with an optimal learning environment that they so deserve!
