My students need ergonomic chairs to facilitate proper seating and positioning for small group collaborative work around a table, stabilize their core muscles during writing/literacy tasks, and inspire learning during speech therapy.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know someone with a disability? My students have speech-language disabilities. Sometimes due to Autism or Traumatic Brain Injury, or sometimes due to unknown causes, my students have difficulty understanding and using language to communicate.
My students are the sweetest, most curious, playful, tenacious, delightful children you will ever meet; however, due to their disabilities, they have difficulty participating in the many communicative interactions and literacy-based experiences that are so common in our everyday world.
While my students have many, many strengths, they also face significant challenges. 76% of the students at my urban elementary school are economically disadvantaged. Some of my students live in foster care. Some have an incarcerated parent. Many live in public housing. Many rely on free school breakfasts and lunches to have healthy, filling meals. Their disabilities can result in debilitating deficits in reading and writing, academic failure, and social isolation.
My students deserve to be happy and healthy at school, as do all students! It is my mission to help them thrive in a therapy environment that is highly engaging, welcoming, and fun, to stimulate exploration and optimize academic success.
My Project
I am building a therapy space for my students to support them on their learning journies, as they acquire critical language, literacy, and social skills during speech and language therapy.
For my students with disabilities, the standard-issued, metal-frame classroom chairs can present significant difficulties due to their sensory, learning, and attention needs.
The HeartWood Adjustable Wooden Chairs will address this issue by using ergonomic design to inspire engagement in learning tasks, help stabilize their core muscles during writing and literacy activities, and facilitate proper positioning for collaborative learning in small groups of up to 3 students around a table.
Variety is the spice of life! As they transition from their classroom to the speech-language therapy room, my spirited, spunky students will love these distinctive chairs. This novel seating option will be part of a therapeutic environment designed to enable my student to acquire the critical academic skills they need in school and life.
The HeartWood Adjustable Wooden Chairs represent a durable, lasting investment in the education of students with disabilities, and will help to stimulate the growth and academic success of hundreds of students for years to come.
