Help me give my students magnetic numbers, number lines, seasonal sensory beads and string, pudding mix, cookie mix, frosting, and candy toppings for seasonal scientific cooking and math integration activities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Transitional Kindergarteners are curious hands-on learners. They need repetition and lots of practice to master foundational skills like counting and number sense. Most students are still developing a basic understanding of numbers and how they work. The biggest challenge is that numbers are an abstract concept, but transitional kindergarteners are still concrete thinkers. They need lots of hands-on experience to help them gain a strong number sense.
By donating to this project you will help students enjoy seasonal treats while also exploring the science of cooking, and you will give them opportunities to practice their math skills in a concrete and memorable way.
Students will measure ingredients, bake cookies, frost, and decorate them using counting and patterning strategies for Valentine’s Day. They will make valentines for loved ones and then use partitive division strategies to determine how many lollipops each student can include with their Valentine gifts to others.
Students will measure ingredients to make chocolate pudding for “dirt cups” and vanilla pudding for “Magic pudding.” They will add Oreo cookie crumbs to the chocolate pudding to make “dirt cups” and then explore counting, addition, and subtraction as they add and subtract (eat) the gummy worms in their “dirt cups”. They will hypothesize what they believe is happening as they watch their vanilla pudding “magically” turn green when they mix it up on St. Patrick’s day.
Students will search for magnetic numbers in the sensory bin—filled with acrylic hearts, and they will use the number lines to count and put the numbers they find in numerical order.
Using the number lines, students will also count out heart-shaped beads and then create a patterned necklace by stringing them on to the lace tipped yarn.
These tactile math and science experiences will support academic growth while a creating incredible memories.
