My Students

What's better than learning math with your hands, discovering how numbers break apart or can be put together? We are really pushing students' thinking in order for them to understand numbers and work with them in new ways.

We are located right in our nation's capitol.

My students are incredibly bright, energetic and enthusiastic first graders that are attending a rigorous charter school. Many of the students come from poverty or low-income families. Their parents have made the choice to send them to our school to enrich their lives and help close the education gap. The students come in excited to learn, happy to be at school, and try their best with the material presented to them. They are funny, full of life, and help put a smile on my face each day.

My Project

My math block consists of small group rotations so that I can work with each student everyday. With this structure, I can see where students are excelling and where they may need a little more help. I am requesting trays to hold the materials needed each day as well as games and manipulatives to invest my students in learning. They will get the opportunity to practice skills through activities rather than paper and pencil alone.

While we are at a rigorous charter school, my first graders are fun-loving kids.

With your help, my students can love learning. If they can have fun while doing it (and maybe not even know they're learning) they can become incredible, unstoppable lifelong math learners.
