Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our public high school is in the heart of Brooklyn, NY, and all of our students are recent immigrants to the U.S., hailing from South Asia, Central America, West Africa, and East Asia, and other corners of the world. They represent a variety of different educational backgrounds, native languages, religions, cultures, and world views. What brings them together is a common eagerness to be accepted and to be at home in this country.
Our school has been remote since NYC closed for COVID-19, leaving many of our students isolated from the supports we provide them at school each day.
This is normally the time of year when we help our graduating seniors prepare for their next steps in life, not always an easy transition for newcomers to the country. Now with COVID-19 keeping us apart from each other, we need to support our students more than ever.
My Project
Originally from Honduras and first in her family to attend college, A. is a shining star both on the soccer field and in the classroom.
Because of her talents, she's been recruited to play for a college far from home and needs everything from winter boots to notebooks to shower shoes.
A. is so skilled on the field that the boys all wish she could join their team, and her coaches believe she has a pro career ahead of her. But her dream will only come true if she can take this next step and attend college. Please help us send her off with all the supplies she needs to succeed!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
