My students are tuneful, beautiful, artful people! Our classroom is filled with joy, the joy that comes from making music together. We sing songs from around the world, move expressively, dance, play instruments, and create music. Some of my students really flourish and become excellent singers or instrument players or dancers. When I identify those high-achieving students, I try to find opportunities for them to shine outside of school. Recently, I helped a few students audition for honor ensembles that require some long-distance traveling.
Five of my students were chosen out of hundreds of auditions for acceptance into the ACDA All-Eastern Honor Choir in Pittsburgh in March 2018!
They worked hard to record an audition at the end of last school year, and we found out in September they were accepted. As with all of my students, they come to our school because it is one of the only schools in New York City to provide free, public, single-sex education. They make a commitment with their families to come to school every day, work hard, and eventually complete a college degree. They may face financial hardship, but they are dedicated students, and I am inspired to work hard for them.
My Project
How many fourth- or fifth-graders get the chance to travel far from home and sing with a large group of dedicated, talented kids? Well, hopefully from our school that number will be precisely five! They will get to sing for a renowned conductor, meet many other like-minded kids who love to make music, and put on a concert with a variety of challenging pieces. I know when I was growing up, I didn't get the chance to go to a far-away honor choir until high school. I would be so honored to give my students this opportunity at a much younger age than I was.
It will cost several thousand dollars to send these hard-working singers to Pittsburgh, and that's where you, the donors, come in.
You can help my students and their families have this experience without the financial struggle of paying for it. You can help us safely transport the students and their parent/guardian chaperone to Pittsburgh on a chartered bus, our greatest expense. You can help provide hotel rooms for those who need it. With your help, we will see these students' eyes sparkle as they represent our school and our city, singing their hearts out in Pittsburgh.
