My students are a fun group of creative and active fifth graders. We live in a rural, isolated village in northwest Alaska, where many students practice subsistence hunting and fishing to support their families. Most of my students are Native Alaskan and are taught traditional native values.
My students love playing sports, hunting caribou, riding snow machines and four-wheelers, going ice fishing, and sledding.
My students are a diverse group with strong ties to their families, their culture, and the land. In the classroom, they are an energetic group that enjoys working in groups, doing hands-on activities, and playing goofy games.
My Project
We read everyday in our class. We have a novel that I read to them everyday, and they have time to read their own books as well. I keep my library stocked with books on their level, so they really enjoy this silent reading time. Every month, I also allow them to choose a book to keep. All of this helps foster a love of reading in my fifth graders.
All of the books in this project were requested by the kids themselves; they are their favorite books that they will take home, read, and share.
These are very well-written books; many are award-winning. These books will show my students how enjoyable reading can be. Help put these great books into the hands of my students!
