At the end of the year, I would like for my students to have gained a well-rounded view of the world and their place within it! Our school provides a variety of enrichment and exposure through partnerships, and these partnerships enhance my children's academic experience.
Our 2nd grade classes really enjoy CookShop in the classroom, as they all learn how fruits, vegetables, and grains grow; they also learn how to create nutritious and yummy snacks using whole foods like carrots, wheat, apples and lettuce.
They really enjoy preparing fresh meals in the classroom.
Our students are an awesome bunch of kids from East Harlem. They are eager to learn and if afforded with the opportunity, would happily partake in socially and culturally enriching experiences, especially one that will permit them to actually serve as chefs for a day! A lot of my students tell their parents what they have learned in CookShop and encourage their parents to buy fresh and organic foods.
Our students really take on chef roles while involved in CookShop, and this trip will permit all three second grade classes to observe a professional kitchen and get Junior Chef Certificates, too.
My Project
Our students will be able to refer to the experience/trip and apply it to what they have already learned about the handling and preparation of fresh foods in CookShop.
Our students all reside in East Harlem and aren't affluent. Many are from low income families that cannot afford an opportunity to enjoy a restaurant meal. We are a Title I school, and the majority of the school's population is entitled to a free or reduced lunch. This will be an experience that several of our students have not yet had, to see how real chefs prepare food for large amounts of clients and how the facility is set up to accommodate the large crowd.
This experience may very well inspire one or more of our students to pursue a career in the culinary arts, which is a goal that many of students might not consider without exposure to such an experience.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
