Send a Bilingual Teacher to the Space Exploration Educators Conference!
I need help attending the 25th annual Space Exploration Educators Conference at Space Center Houston which is 3 day, and I will need lodging and will incur travel expenses.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the lucky teacher to 13 fabulous bilingual kinder students this year. Although the school year just started, I was able to meet a few of them last year in Pre-K because our bilingual Pre-K teachers would bring them by to visit. They felt right at home in my classroom. I have students from several different countries including Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and also from the U.S. whose parents immigrated here.
I was an emergent bilingual student growing up so I know what it's like to go through the second acquisition process of learning a second language just like my students are now.
I feel that this unique experience helped me to relate to my students and also helps me to build a relationship with them.
My Project
This conference is for grades kindergarten to 12th – and not just for science teachers! Space Center Houston strives to use space to teach across the curriculum. The activities presented can be used for science, language arts, mathematics, history, and more.
I will be able to attend sessions hosted by the actual scientists and engineers working on exciting endeavors like the International Space Station and explorations of Mars and the planets beyond.
Sessions span across several contents and domains. I will get training for hands-on coding, STEM, and robotics, to name a few, to use with ALL learners such as emergent bilinguals and special education students.
After implementing coding and STEM activities and lessons into my curriculum for the first time last year, I feel I am able to be a little more ambitious and include even more hands-on activities such as ozobots and cublets.
